Shame provokes anger

In a book about power and shame, Top Dog/Bottom Dog (1987), the author showed how pervasive and deadly these struggles can be. One of the exchanges between the fictional characters in that book which seemed to have an impact on readers concerned a couple trying to have sex in the midst of a shaky marriage. The sex doesn’t work well, and afterward they feel more distant than before. The wife, who is superficially more shame-prone, in the sense that she knows when she is feeling bad about herself, is eager to get some reassurance. The husband, a dynamic and successful man, impatient with his wife’s depressions and intolerant of his own selfdoubts, defends against encroaching shame with anger.
Martin: “How was it?”
(I can’t bear the thought that I’m not a
good lover.)
Georgette: “Fine.”
(I’m ashamed to admit I need more.)
Martin: “You don’t sound fine.”
(You’re ruining it again, Georgette.)
Georgette: “I’m sorry.”
(I hate myself.) 1
