"Drawing on experiences of women, men, and children on low incomes in Britain, the chapter reveals daily psychological as well as material struggles. It demonstrates how poverty can trail a profound sense of inadequacy and unworthiness to which people risk exposure in multiple arenas. Yet such ‘shame’ was rarely named, and instead a range of other terms were used to denote its existence, what we have termed the ‘colloquialisms of shame’. People responded in complex ways to avoid shame or deal with its impact. Some withdrew, while others hid the reality of their circumstances, or did what they could to keep up appearances. Many strived to distance themselves from the pervasive negative stereotypes associated with people in poverty, in so doing sometimes stigmatizing ‘others’ whom they felt must meet such typecasts." (Chase and Bantebya-Kyomuhendo 2015)
