Daily at-home rituals share equal importance with the grand rituals of public life. Without them, our lives become stale, just as without the grandiose ceremonies of the world-a coronation twice a century, a state funeral, fireworks on the Fouth of July-public life would become gray and dour. Commenting on the distinction between large, public rituals, and smaller ones, Driver (1998) said that we tend to think about only “big” rituals—church services, funeral processions, state ceremonies, weddings, festivals, and so on. Thus we don’t notice how strongly our lives are affected by smaller rituals: greetings and leave-taking, table manners, making beds, visiting grandmother, making a date, etc. But because they have a daily familiarity and have become second nature does not mean that they are not important (p.13). (Lyons, 2007)
