What we have here is a post-industrial nostalgia for the pre-industrial. In a culture with a surfeit of branding and cheap mass-produced goods, we romanticise the handmade because we yearn for quality, not quantity. The irony is that while western consumers aspire to craftsmanship, the majority of the world’s population lives in countries that have local craftsmen but aspire to industrialised products. Mass manufacturing will be essential to lifting a billion people out of poverty, and providing basic goods that we took for granted long ago. Meanwhile, we’ll be seeing more crafted industrial objects coming our way, as we lust after craftsmanship we can’t afford and disdain the industrial products we can. (McGurick, 2011)

(Jiménez and Rodríguez, 2011)

Enduring public scorn, Hester becomes the only “sinner” in the book who manages to remain unrepentant; she retains her dignity despite the public punishment designed to shame her. Unlike the guilt-ridden Dimmesdale, she remains calm about having bucked the rules of society, a fact that may reflect a belief on Hawthorne's part that women, contrary to sexist stereotypes, were more prone than men to rebel against the conventions of society. Such stereotypes may explain the ironic fact that the Puritan community ultimately fails to recognize her unrepentant attitude; they, not Hester, eventually begin ascribing new meanings like “Able” to the scarlet badge that was meant to brand Hester as an adulteress. (Karam, 2015)
