While Indigenous men face unacceptably high rates of incarceration; the rate for Indigenous women is significantly higher and is rising at a faster rate. For the June 2002 quarter, Indigenous women were over‐represented at 19.6 times the non‐Indigenous rate compared with Indigenous men at 15.2 times. The imprisonment of Indigenous women exposes the children of the community to risk of neglect, abuse, hunger and homelessness.
