Definition

Viruses are intracellular, parasitic, pathogenic organisms that consist of either deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA), either of which can be single-stranded or double-stranded depending on the virus type. Both types are surrounded by a protein coat called the capsid; the combination of genome and capsid is referred to as the nucleocapsid. Some viruses also have an outer envelope with embedded spikes acquired by budding through a cellular membrane. (Anon 2014)
